“…”

He knew by now that Rinoa would expect every possible response from him, while playfully commenting on it. The commander raised a single brow at her giggling— she was obviously amused by his lack of responses.

“You’re cheerful today,” he remarked.

(But you’re like that every day, aren’t you? It’s been a while…)

image

“Well, I haven’t got anything to be miserable about.”

Although that wasn’t strictly true. How long had it been since he left without leaving word of where he was going or when he would return? Naturally Garden wouldn’t tell her if he had gone on a mission, no, telling a known sorceress the commanders whereabouts would be foolish. Still, it was better to be cheerful because Squall didn’t know how to handle her when she was sad.

“—When did you get back?”

He could be relieved to know she was fine, but something told him otherwise. The commander shook the feeling off as he focused on Rinoa’s question, eyes narrowing sharp in a calculating manner. He has just returned from a mission, and he might be busy again. Time was precious.

"— Just now," he muttered.

He wasn’t quite sure if he should take her approach as a pleasant surprise or not. One thing was for sure, though, he wasn’t offended by her comment. However, he wasn’t used to expressing anything else but his brooding face. He didn’t attempt to change this part of him either — not any time soon at least.

“I’ve had better days,” he admitted. He learned to react more openly around her, but there was still a lot to hold back in.

A direct and none committal response is what she had come to expect of the taciturn, not that she minded —It was much better than him merely shrugging or folding his arms and turning his gaze away from her. Taking a step towards him, she linked her hands at the small of her back, a soft smile tugging at the curve of her mouth.

“That’s no good. I’d ask if you wanted to talk about it, but I expect your answer would be ‘Not really’.” She couldn’t help but allow a soft giggle to escape her then.

— Squall & Kairi

kairisdestiny:

The local inn— a good place to stay for the night. Squall followed after the girl as he started to see more of the town side of the island. There were people, although quite a few number of them due to the time of day. He wasn’t one for sight seeing, and so he didn’t think a question like that would be thrown at him.
image

“Pretty? — It’s alright, I suppose.” The best answer he could come up with. He didn’t want to stop and make some sentimental speech about the scenery. He just wanted to get to the inn as soon as possible.

image

“Yeah it is. Isn’t it!” Kairi said with a small smile. She had lived here her whole life so she couldn’t help thinking it was the most magical place in the whole world. Although she did want to go on adventures and see other worlds.

The two continued to walk together, Kairi walked a bit ahead of the tall dark haired boy because she was leading the way. He followed a bit behind her not wanting to get to far away or too close.

“Well here we are.” she said as the two stood in front of a tavern like place that said Destiny Island Inn on the top in big letters.

After seeing the town itself, the inn didn’t quite make an impression on him, unfortunately. He didn’t care, however, his mind now set on a particular question. The youth glanced at the redhead, brooding over the chance that she may stick around a bit longer.

image

"What’s the currency here?" he asked nonchalantly. Squall was definitely aware of this issue, especially when considering other worlds. All he had was gil, and he wasn’t sure if the inn would accept any of it. If that were the case, he would run into another problem.

“Err….hello,” Harry greeted with a small smile and a wave of his hand.

Here a newcomer approached him in a friendly manner. Squall had not seen him about, nor recognised his style of clothing. Perhaps another person from a far away land? With his experience, it could be true.

"— Hello," he greeted back. Hopefully this was a passing meeting. He wasn’t used to making new friends.

He always looks like he’s in a bad mood. She thought to herself. Of all the memories that she had of him, the ones that stuck out the most were of him looking thoroughly unimpressed with his situation and those around him. Looking at him now and seeing that same expression, she couldn’t help but smile.

“You know, sometimes I wonder if the wind changed and your face got stuck like that, or if you were just born that way.” Hopefully he’d take it as the joke it was intended to be, but one could never quite tell with him.

“How are you?”

aimingforyourheart asked: Heya~. Didja miss me?

— No.

(Not quite impressed with your disappearing act, Irvine.)

It has been a few weeks — maybe even a month since the day of the kiss. That day the small group who fought against Ultimecia celebrated a victory party at the Balamb Garden. Everyone was happy or content, even Squall. He shared a kiss with a certain girl in blue and black, and even shared a smile right before. A relationship formed shortly after the special event.

But, as the days went on, the pair slowly fell apart. Feelings were still strong, but in reality, they were love for friendship. After realising the truth, the two returned together as friends, and accepted the real decision. Afterward, and as if it was a choice from lady luck, the two were busy as ever, more-so the commander of the Garden.

Squall accepted his job as commander, but he wasn’t too content with it. It was a duty he believed he should take care of — and only he was the best choice for this as fate intended. But he didn’t care for fate, or anything like that, despite the events he went through.

As for Rinoa, the gunblader had no idea what she has been up to. He had seen her on occasions but only passing by. One time he managed to see a hand wave and a smile, but he quickly returned to his duty there after. Day after day, busy schedules here and there — it was like this for a while.

— Until one day, it seemed as though he didn’t have to work so much. He had more time for breaks, but he felt bored, and had almost forgotten what to do on his free time. Dropping a pencil on the side of the paper, the youth glanced off to the window nearby. His eyes flickered twice at the view outside, but then he spotted a familiar figure down below — the same girl in blue and black.

image

"Rinoa…"

He seemed a little shock, but his expression quickly returned to his usual silent one. The commander turned his gaze away from the light and the figure, thinking quietly over what to do.

(She’s here… Did she come to see me?)

He wasted no more time — he stood and left his office. Upon exiting the building, the youth found the girl a few feet away from the spot she was. Did she see him through the window and waited? Or was she here for something else? Squall didn’t know, and he was about to find out.

"Rinoa," he called to her in a husky voice. "What are you doing here…?"
